Goodbye to the trusty rustbucket
The first RV i bought didn’t work out. I knew that before i started this blog, but i also knew i was going to need to refer to that one, so here’s the TL;DR:
- I bought an 18′ 1987 Class C Winnebago Itasca with a Chevy 350 in it
- I knew the living space part was in dire need of work, but i had nine months to fix it up plus the friends/tools to help me out, so i decided to try it
- When i had it evaluated by a mechanic, at first it seemed like things were going well–it needed some new seals, but otherwise the engine was in great shape
- I still didn’t want to dive into it without an expert opinion. My parents’ neighbor is a Certified RV Nerd and a DIY enthusiast who was kind enough to come take a peek at it
- He convinced me it was too big of a project even for someone more experienced, and that i should find something in better, especially if i was going to live in it instead of just do holidays

It’s so much cleaner looking on the outside than the one i ended up with, lol. Anyway, i will occasionally refer to this one, whose nickname is “the rustbucket” because i refused to give it a real name until/if i decided to keep it, which i won’t do.
I hope someone with the skills/resources does decide to fix it up, because i always had a good feeling about it. I think it’s going to keep running for another 38 years if somebody renovates it and takes good care of it.
